We have been enjoying the countless benefits that trees give us since time immemorial. As a matter of fact, we need trees more than they need us! But due to human recklessness and deforestation, the green surroundings will be gone in no time.
If you are familiar with the movie Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, one thing that it taught us is that all creatures in the ecosystem are linked to each other. We are different, but we work as a whole. When a part of the ecosystem ceases to exist, the other units that rely on it will soon follow. If no one will give a damn about this, it is certain that there is no hope that things will get better.
The nature presents us with all the consequences of our behaviour. Polar ice caps are melting; sea levels are rising. Cyclones and typhoons are also stronger since the last century. All of these are caused by the depletion of the ozone layer and global warming. Fortunately, trees can save us! However, we will only see the light at the end of the tunnel if we take the road towards sustainable development.
One Goal, One Community
All of us can be tree ambassadors. You just need to have the heart to do it. Having a community of tree lovers will ensure that the future will still see the budding of leaves in the spring and the dancing of branches in the breath of wind. Thank heavens, there are various civic groups across the world that are making this happen.
For instance, RETREET, a Dallas-based environmental group, replant trees in areas that were devastated by natural disasters. According to the organisation, people lose their sense of environmental identity after their neighbourhood or community is hit by a disaster. The group aims to make tree planting a natural response to these calamities. Not only it will give people a new promise for a better tomorrow, but will also act as a psychological relief that the community will be back to once it was before.
It is not too late for you to make a difference. There is still hope, and it is us! Live an environmentally sustainable life and encourage others to do the same.
